Promotional Statement

The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is housed in the northern wing on the first floor of the
historic railway station in Dunedin. It was formally opened by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jenny Shipley, on November 25, 1999.

The Hall contains a wide variety of displays reflecting the achievements of inducted members and among the memorabilia on display is the first Olympic
medal won by a New Zealander and the first Olympic gold medal won by a New Zealander. Included among the displays is a scale-model old-style cricket grandstand with lifesize models of Bert Sutcliffe and Martin Donnelly going
out to bat.

There is also a fullsize long jump pit on which is depicted the winning jump by Yvette Williams at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952; golfers Bob Charles, Stuart Jones and Oliver Hollis are featured on a
simualted green; mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary is featured alongside a ceiling-to-floor depiction of Mt. Everest on which is marked his route to the summit in 1953.

Rugby has its own gallery featuring inducted members and teams, including historic material from the 1905 and 1924 All Black tours of Britain.

The Hall also houses an extensive library comprising hundreds of books, plus newspaper clippings, private papers and photos associated with inducted members.
