Promotional Statement

Throughout the galleries of the National Art Museum of Sport,
athletes reach for their best: Arthur Ashe cooly returns a serve. Gordie Howe skates toward the goal in perfect form. Bob Cousy moves through space to the basket. Inuit youngsters wrestle for victory in Spring Games. The
focus of athletes, their confidence, their exhiliration are captured in oil, bronze, and ink in the 750 works of art in the permanent collection of the
National Art Museum of Sport at University Place on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. It is considered the nation's largest collection of art devoted to sport.

Images of athletes -- anonymous as well as legends -- emphasize the artists' own search for perfection. They, too, reach for the best.
