Promotional Statement

Organized in 1987, the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame pays tribute to the many heroes and important names in the rich
history of sports achievement in the Lake Michigan shoreline area anchored by Greater Muskegon.

A fascinating collection of artifacts, photos and commemorative plaques honoring our sports heritage await the visitor to our displays. Located in the L.C. Walker Arena and Conference Center, the hall features displays highlighting the accomplishments of the over 100 sports notables enshrined over the years.

A sampling of inductees includes: Bennie Oosterbaan, all-time All American at the University of
Michigan: Earl Morrall, NFL MVP with the Baltimore Colts; Bob Zuppke, legendary football coach at the University of Illinois; Kenny Lane, a top contender for boxing's lightweight crown in the 1950's; Frank Howell, University of Michigan football and baseball player; Jack Tighe, former manager of the Detroit Tigers; Sally Sessions, a founding member of the
LPGA; Paul Griffin, former NBA ball player; Ed Burton, former member of the Harlem Globetrotters and NBA; and Sherm Poppen, the inventor of the snowboard.

Sports fans are invited to relive the area's storied athletic history in the Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame.

"American Champions and Barrier Breakers: Jackie Robinson, Joe Louis and Althea Gibson,” exhibit will be on display from Feb. 17, 2012, to July 30, 2012, and celebrates the lives of Robinson, Louis and Gibson, their sports achievements and their important legacies. The exhibit will feature artifacts, documents and photographs of these three American icons while calling attention to the numerous contributions that African Americans have made to golf for more than a century.
